Unable to type in feet and inches into a drawing in AutoCAD

Issue:

When typing measurement values into a drawing in AutoCAD, lengths in feet (') and inch (") symbols are rejected. For input at the mouse cursor, a red frame will show around the input box.

Causes:

The drawing is set to use Decimal units instead of Architectural.

Solution:

Change the units of the drawing to Architectural (see: How to set units to Architectural in AutoCAD).
