How to Split a Solid Into Two Bodies

Autodesk Support

May 16, 2017

Use the Split Body command on the Modify panel in the Model workspace.

You can use a workplane, surface, sketch, or face to split a body.

The object that does the splitting must intersect the body or intersect the body if you extended it. A red shape shows where the split occurs.

You can select:

  •   A workplane.
  • A surface body. You can select one or all of the faces.

For example, the red surface shows where the faces extend through the solid.

  • A sketch. The sketch can be an open or closed profile. The sketch must be able to pass through the body if you extrude it.
  • A face on a solid body. For example, this cylinder would extend through the rectangular solid.

  1. Choose Modify > Split Body.
  2. For Body to Split, select the solid that you want to split.
  3. For Splitting Tool, select the object that will split the body.
  4. If the splitting object does not already intersect the body, select Extend Splitting Tool.

Note: You can also use the Extrude command to extrude a sketch profile through the solid. This removes everything below the sketch and leaves a gap.

For example, if you extrude this sketch, you remove the part of the solid below the sketch.
