Use conceptual models to analyze and plan excavation for bridges

Autodesk Support

Feb 9, 2018

What

Begin with a conceptual model to save time creating an excavation design for civil structures, such as a bridge.

Who

Civil engineers, surveyors, and other AEC roles involved in infrastructure projects.

How

Create your terrain and conceptual model of a bridge in Infraworks.

  1. In AutoCAD Civil 3D, open the existing ground surface and conceptual model of a bridge or other structure, such as a retaining wall.

  1. Define a feature line as an excavation base, for instance, for a foundation pier:

  1. Specify site, name, and elevation:

  1. Select Grading Creation Tools and specify Group, Surface, and Grading Criteria:

  1. Select Create Grading (read in the command line for each step), applying a slope of 3:2 for the entire length of the feature line shape excavation.

  1. In this case, the excavation shape is not constructible. Here, you need to apply at least two different criteria, as follows:

  1. Apply Create Grading and select the feature line.
  2. Select No when Civil 3D prompts you about length .
  3. Select the first corner and press Enter to confirm. Then select second corner and press Enter.

  1. Specify a slope, such as 0.01:1 for cut and 3.2 for fill.;
  2. Select Create Grading again, but specify a second criterion, such as slope 3:2 both for cut and fill.
  3. Finally, select Create Infill and select an area inside the feature line.

Why

Excavation is a crucial concern in all infrastructure projects.
