Generative Design in Revit and Dynamo for Workspace Layout

Autodesk Support

Jan 20, 2021

Description

This is a hands-on training course that will teach you how to use Generative Design in Autodesk Revit to perform workspace layout.  Through a total of five exercises, you will generate alternatives for the placements of desks in office environments to meet physical distancing requirements.  These exercises increase in complexity as you go along, starting with “out-of-the-box” Revit samples and working towards “built-from-scratch” studies in Dynamo for Revit.

Course Materials

Step-by-step training guides (attached):  "Workspace Layout.pdf" (English) and "Workspace Layout_DE.pdf" (German)*

Datasets (compressed file):  "Datasets.zip" found at this link

All contents are included to complete this course, including Revit 2021 project file, Revit 2021 families, Dynamo scripts, etc.

*Special thanks to Lejla Secerbegovic for translating this manual into German and providing instructions on adapting the dataset for the German version of Revit.

Software Requirements

Autodesk Revit 2021 or newer

Generative Design in Revit 2021, accessed via subscription to the Autodesk AEC Collection**

Dynamo for Revit 2.5 (installed with Revit 2021) or newer

**The exercises in this course utilize Generative Design in Revit, a feature of the Autodesk AEC Collection. However, the course may be completed using Dynamo for Revit exclusively if Revit is accessed through a trial, educational license, or standalone subscription.  For more information, see https://www.generativedesign.org/03-hello-gd-for-revit/03-01_installing-gd-for-revit.

Agenda

Exercise 1: Desk Layout using Workspace Layout Study

Demonstrates Generative Design in Revit using the “out-of-the-box” Workspace Layout sample study supplied with Revit 2021

Exercise 2a: Standing Desk Layout using Customized Workspace Layout Study

Demonstrates the use of Dynamo for Revit to customize the existing Workspace Layout study and re-export for use with Generative Design in Revit

Corrects the study to ensure families are placed on the expected level

Improves the dimensional rules for the study to better place families of varying sizes

Exercise 2b: Standing Desk Layout using Customized Grid Object Placement Study

Demonstrates the use of Dynamo for Revit to customize the existing Grid Object Placement study and re-export for use with Generative Design in Revit

Extends the variable ranges for this study to better place families of varying sizes

Changes the units of the study from metric to imperial

Exercise 2c: Standing Desk Layout using New Generative Design Study

Demonstrates the creation of a new generative design study “from scratch” using Dynamo for Revit and Generative Design in Revit

Enables measurement of families from their edges, as opposed to insertion points

Enables control of X and Y distances between desks and walls independently

Exercise 2d: Standing Desk Layout using Customized Stepped Grid Object Placement Study

Demonstrates the use of Dynamo for Revit to customize the existing Stepped Grid Object Placement study and re-export for use with Generative Design in Revit

Corrects the study to ensure families are placed on the expected level

Improves the dimensional rules for the study to better place families of varying sizes
