Using Maya with Windows Remote Desktop Connection

Autodesk Support

Apr 21, 2020

For the most part, you should be able to run Maya normally over Remote Desktop Connection on Windows. This is what many of us are doing right now, too.

By default, this configuration forces Maya’s Viewport 2.0 into DirectX 11 mode.

If you have an Nvidia GeForce graphics card and you want to use OpenGL mode instead, we wanted to make sure you know Nvidia has released a new tool to enable Windows Remote Desktop streaming of OpenGL applications with GeForce drivers R440 or later.

To use this tool with Maya 2020, enable the environment variable MAYA_ALLOW_OPENGL_REMOTE_SESSION=1.

To use this tool with Maya 2019, install Maya 2019.3.1 Update (available from your Autodesk Account), then enable the environment variable MAYA_ALLOW_OPENGL_REMOTE_SESSION=1.

To use this tool with Maya 2018, install Maya 2018.7 Update (available from your Autodesk Account), then enable the environment variable MAYA_ALLOW_OPENGL_REMOTE_SESSION=1.

Note: If you have an Nvidia Quadro graphics card, you can use the same environment variable for OpenGL mode, and the Nvidia tool is not required.
