MEL Scripting BASICS in Maya

Autodesk Support

Jan 21, 2019

What:
MEL (Maya Embedded Language) is a scripting language in Maya that allows you to automate workflows.

Who:
This BASIC introduction is for all who have never had anything to do with scripting before. Part 1 covers the basic usage of the Script Editor.

How:
At the beginning we're going to watch Maya's output in the Script Editor and copy existing commands to modify them. Scripts can be stored as text files or turned into Shelf buttons, Hotkeys or Marking Menus.

Why:
Automation with scripts can do a lot of routine work, so artists have more time for creative work.
Complex workflows can be precisely defined and executed over and over again.

What's next:
MEL Scripting even allows to create user interface elements and to adapt Maya to the given tasks.
