This class will walk through the basic concepts involved in using

Python within the Dynamo Environment.

We will cover some basic Python concepts that are needed to write a few code samples,

as well as explain in detail all the boiler plate and import codes that are used.

The class will also touch on some aspects of the Revit API that are needed

to perform basic operations such as the active document and transactions.

This is an introductory class to Python—no previous experience required. The class will walk through basic concepts of Python, and show how to set up a Python programming environment. It will cover Python’s flow control mechanisms and basic data types, as well as some of the native libraries that you can use to develop your own automation tools in Python. At the end of the session, attendees will be able to develop a working Python script that can read and write files that can be used to transfer data between different platforms.

Learn how to use Python in Dynamo to enable more editing options than ever before. Python is one of the fastest-growing scripting languages and can be used for daily tasks in your own projects. Dynamo can let you directly input Python code into your scripts to do things regular nodes can’t. This course will lead you through how to plan, edit, and execute your own scripts with Python for Dynamo. Learn about the essentials of setting up your own Python script, and edit geometry, sort data lists, write content to Revit software, and much more. With Python, you can unleash the potential in your projects so come and see what’s possible.

The script language MEL (Maya Embedded Language) is not only a feature of Autodesk Maya software, it is the foundation. Every function in Maya is a MEL command that can be accessed using menus, icons, buttons, marking menus, and other controls. In this class, we will cover MEL concepts, the possibilities and limitations of this scripting language, and the differences in the Maya API. We will work through some examples, and discuss the differences between MEL and Python and explain the advantages of using Python for Maya.

Every year we see more Dynamo users coming from Autodesk University, and often they are eager to learn more. Once users reach an intermediate-to-advanced stage in Dynamo, they often look at what to do next—and frequently that involves using Python textual programming language within Dynamo. With Python, Dynamo users can access the Revit API (application programming interface) in a whole new way, and create additional functionality to make the making of things easier. This lab will not be an overly complex look at Python from a computer programmer's point of view. Instead, it will provide an introduction to the Python environment within Dynamo from a Revit user's perspective. As a Dynamo user, the speaker has struggled with the same scenarios and has used Python in ways never anticipated. This lab will cover key concepts for Python, including syntax, indentation, object types, and iteration, while relating it all back to Revit terms.

This lab will explain the process of accessing Python inside of Dynamo, a powerful way to talk to the Revit API and allow for greater degrees of functionality that out-of-the-box Dynamo and community driven packages may lack. It will cover the core basics of the Python language such as syntax, what the IDE colours mean, how and when to indent (And what it means if you don't), what object types are and how to cast them to another type as well as covering looping? one of the most powerful features that Python has available. It will discuss the potential pitfalls that you run into when accessing Python from Dynamo such as data typologies and wrapping, before diving deeper into external resources: How to access the contents of an external .dll, how Dynamo specifically talks to external and internal resources, how we can retain a 'lightness of touch' by only importing targeted methods before looking at how we interaction with the Revit document through transactions and specific Dynamo casts. It will cover the limitations of the Python Node in Dynamo, such as list interaction and a lack of a real intellisense, before working through a couple of examples of Revit API calls that are not present in out-of-the-box Dynamo.

My own experience at Hawkins\Brown has taught me that a significant hurdle in the implementation of computational design workflows into an office is new users getting over the fear factor of interacting in a visual scripting environment. We have had success in overcoming this hurdle by developing custom GUI nodes for Dynamo, that allow complex multistage scripts to be run without the need to interact with Dynamo.This session will provide attendees with a step-by-step guide on how to create a Winform ComboBox dropdown selector UI custom node directly in Dynamo using Python. Once complete, I will also identify how only 20% of the code needs to be adapted to be able to create a number of further UI’s including Select a file, Textbox input, and Warning message.The workshop utilises the Winform GUI library as part of the Microsoft .NET Framework which typically requires an IDE for utilisation. However Dynamo’s use of IronPython, which is integrated with the .NET Framework, IronPython can use the Winform and other such libraries. This opens the door for all skill levels of users to explore GUI development directly in Dynamo. Given that GUI development is typically not supported in Python there is very little literature on the topic which makes it difficult to learn on your own. This is a key reason why I have decided to propose this session in Python with Dynamo and not C# with Visual Studio as it will provide a source of information for an otherwise poorly document field. This is alongside the fact that it will be more assessable to a wider number of delegates. Having said this, the session could more easily be adapted to cover the same topic but in C# within visual studio. The session will be split into 3 clear sections: 1) Presentation: Providing an overview of the topic; 2) Lab/ workshop tutorial: Providing a step-by-step guide for how to code a Winform ComboBox drop down selection GUI; 3) A live demonstration on how only a small amount of the code that everyone has just written needs to be altered in order to create a different type of GUI.

This class will showcase a connected data workflow used to deliver large water and sewer infrastructure projects from design to commissioning. This is accomplished with a systematic use of Civil 3D software and ArcGIS integration, asset data governance, and Industry Foundation classes (IFC) for digital-twin commissioning. The sewer and water designs are first developed in Civil 3D. Dynamo and Python are used to attach a class library as property set data and generate a spreadsheet model database. The spreadsheet is linked to an Esri geodatabase through geoprocessing and Python. This geodatabase is updated with field-collected attribute data and as-built data via Esri Field Maps. The computational process is reversed to update the spreadsheet and subsequently the Civil 3D model. The model is delivered as-built, and an IFC version containing the asset data is exported for the owner's digital-twin ecosystem.

We all know that testing your code is a critical step in deploying software, but manually following a script and pressing buttons on each screen is time consuming and error prone.In this class, we'll cover various testing strategies for Fusion 360 add-ins written in python, including structuring your add-in for unit testing, automating integration testing, and utilizing continuous integration systems.The goal of these is to ensure that your add-in is easily tested and verified, which will drive down bugs and drive up user satisfaction.This class is geared towards advanced programmers and add-in developers, and will cover Fusion 360 command and command definition APIs, events, and palettes.Experience with web development concepts (to use palettes) is highly recommended. (Joint AU/Forge DevCon class).

This class will discuss using the 3ds Max software development kit (SDK) for automating common tasks within 3ds Max software. We will spend time discussing the .NET API and the Python environments, and we’ll compare them both. The Python SDK is using a newer API called MaxPlus, but it is not fully exposing the C++ API. While .NET API is exposing most of the C++ API, it can sometimes be more difficult to work with. We will compare them and show techniques for automating common tasks, and creating user interfaces to control your tools. This session features 3ds Max. AIA Approved

By writing programs using Fusion 360 software’s Application Programming Interface (API), you can customize Fusion 360 software to more efficiently accomplish the tasks you need it to do. You can also create new applications that can be provided to Fusion 360 software users through the Autodesk Exchange Store. This class will begin with the basics by looking at how you can write a program in either JavaScript API or Python software, but then will focus on using Python by looking at the basic syntax and statements you’ll need in most programs and discovering how to debug your Python programs. The class then will dive into Fusion 360 software’s programming interface where its core principles are described and demonstrated. Finally, we’ll discuss the more advanced topic of creating custom commands.

In this class, we will introduce you to the programming language Python. You will learn how to set up a simple development environment and create a few basic scripts. Next, you will learn to install and test the scripts with AutoCAD Plant 3D software. Come and learn how to use scripting to create custom objects for use in AutoCAD Plant 3D.

The goal of this presentation is to help Revit users who are looking to use code to improve their workflows. Revit API might sound impossible to learn, but it's not that complicated if you follow the right road map. The speaker has created hundreds of Revit add-ins, made about 100 video tutorials on Revit API, and taught hundreds if not thousands of people how to do the same. And this presentation will show you where you should start and which basics you should focus on. This will be a great brief introduction to Revit API basics, and will demonstrate how to apply it to create a custom Revit add-in.

In this class, we'll understand how to use Dynamo software to perform daily activities from a Mechanical and Electrical contractor point of view-starting from simple parameters mirroring and going to more-advanced techniques, including the use of Python scripting. The requirement of a LOD400 model for 34 kilometers of tunnel can be quite complex if you don't choose the right way. Starting from a simple Microsoft Excel file with the tunnel alignment, you'll be able to create a fully detailed design, including all the information useful for the facilities management system. Dynamo is the key when you've got to place thousands of elements based on rules and algorithms. This is a real-world applications in one of the most iconic rail projects in the Middle East

This class will demonstrate effective practices for creating, sharing, and maintaining custom Dynamo extension nodes. The class will use Python scripting and DesignScript programming language to customize the Dynamo extension, and we'll explore effective practices for curating reusable nodes for sharing through the package manager. Finally, the class will showcase custom Dynamo extension packages, authored by the presenter, and walk through how these packages are used and maintained for the user community.

This class will present how real-life architectural projects have used the Dynamo visual programming extension to optimize complex design problems within Revit software. The class will give an introduction to optimization and rationalization algorithms, and the attendees will use the Dynamo extension and Python programming language scripts to create faades that adapt to varying design requirements. Attendees will also learn how to generalize the workflow so to apply it to other design problems concerning rationalization and optimization.
