Connecting Autodesk Fusion 360 to SAP Using the Autodesk Forge Data API

Description

Integrations between cloud-based enterprise applications should be instant, automatic, and simple—yet too many processes today still require manual data entry or the uploading or downloading of CSV files. The new Autodesk Forge Data API exposes the granular data you need to seamlessly integrate Autodesk Fusion 360 into your data workflows. Learn how CIDEON, an Autodesk and SAP Platinum Partner, is using Autodesk Forge to simplify connecting Autodesk Fusion 360 data to SAP. In this class, we’ll discuss two integration scenarios and how the Autodesk Forge APIs helped us with them, and we’ll demonstrate and discuss the benefits of two solutions: An Autodesk Forge Data-powered connector that enables fast, efficient, and seamless integration between Autodesk Fusion 360 and SAP, linking Autodesk Fusion 360 components with SAP ERP and transferring bills of materials; and an Autodesk Forge Viewer-powered SAP product configurator that provides an intuitive, visual user experience by interacting with a 3D representation of the underlying configuration.

Key Learnings

  • Envision new process enhancements and the integration potentials by the Autodesk Forge APIs.
  • Compare and choose from different integration approaches.
  • Reimagine systems supplementing each other by connecting their strengths.
  • Find a fitting Autodesk API for your own integration projects.

I am living in Germany, in a small town close to Dresden. I was lucky enough to start my studies in computer science just when the Internet took off in the beginning of the Nineties. I then started as a programmer, then I worked as a development manager for CIDEON Software & Services for many years, creating CAD-related solutions, mainly ERP integrations. Today I am responsible for CIDEONs complete development team, including the customer support. My first CAD-related programming was a little drawing generator in AutoCAD version 12 (no, not "2012") on MS DOS, with an NC export for a pipe bending machine. This was back in 1994. Our first SAP integration which created SAP BOMs out of AutoCAD was created in 1996. Since then, we explored quite some AutoCAD verticals, Autodesk Inventor, Revit, Fusion 360, and Forge (now APS – Autodesk Platform Services) and created solutions for / with them. But Autodesk's PDM/PLM side too, like Productstream, Vault, Fusion Manage. And yes, also some CAD systems outside Autodesk's eco system. So, whether you want to chat nostalgically about AutoCAD ADS programming and about SAP interfaces from the pre-RFC era or rather discuss the latest cloud technologies from Autodesk and SAP – I am happy to do so.
