Delivering Digital Business Case for Change & Predicted ROI. Saving £4.5m

Imagine asking your board for one of the largest digital investments to date operating as a leading UK contractor in an industry well known for slow digital uptake. We put forward our business case three years ago predicating a 20% productivity gain. Our deployment of Forma Design Collaboration is one of our most successful digital transformation projects, with 46+ projects and 1,400+ users engaged. A recent study across our multidisciplinary stakeholders comprising of architects, designers, supply chain, and a variety of general contractor staff has shown that 85% of users confirmed improved collaboration across all functions, team members, and functions; 91% of users confirmed improved visibility and understanding of design information; 77% confirmed the technology has improved design productivity and efficiency; and 86% would recommend the use of the tools to others. We will share details on how we built our business case and predictions, and how we delivered on this to create change in the industry.

Automating a Complex Revit Bridge Model with Grasshopper, Dynamo, and Informed Design

This session will outline a workflow for creating a Revit model of a steel composite cable stay bridge by using a combo of Grasshopper, Dynamo, and Informed Design for Inventor software. Modeling a bridge structure poses challenges due to its complex geometry, which adheres to a vertical, horizontal, and super-elevated roadway profile. Consequently, the steel girders, beams, and connection details must align with this 3D roadway profile, complicating the creation and placement of Revit families. For this challenge, COWI used Grasshopper and Dynamo to automate the creation of steel geometry, parameters, and insertion points, ensuring accurate orientation for family placement. Additionally, Informed Design was used to transform various iterations of intricate steel connections into families, which were then positioned using a Dynamo workflow. The integration of visual programming and Informed Design has been vital in efficiently producing complex bridge structures with a focus on Automation, Integration, & Customization.

ACC for Civil Infrastructure Projects: It's What Highly Productive BIM Coordinators and CAD Managers Crave

This interactive lab will be an accelerator that will teach BIM coordinators and CAD managers how to effectively use Autodesk Forma to manage civil infrastructure projects with modern cloud-based tools. We’ll take an immersive approach to learning: The class will be split up into disciplines, simulating a real project. The disciplines will work together to federate a project model using preprepared files. We’ll start with the basics of recommended file organization in Forma Data Management, set up our coordination space in Modeling, walk through best practices for exporting and coordinating discipline-specific models, run a mock clash-detection meeting, create/organize and report on our Autodesk Forma Issues, and then archive our project simulating a milestone submittal. Many of the default coordination tools in Autodesk Forma are built with vertical construction in mind. But there’s a world of value for horizontal construction as well—you just have to know how to unlock it!

This presentation aims to demonstrate the ease of the Autodesk Forma setup and what an administrator (Qatar Rail) needs to do in order to set up and manage Autodesk Forma to address increased requirements and responsibilities, as well as additional interface between each civil design-and-build project and system integrator. We will showcase the process of how Qatar Rail selected the preferred Autodesk Forma setup option, showing the pros and cons of each. Material waste in construction commonly adds up to as much as 30% of procured material and 10% or more of project budget, offering a clear opportunity for optimization. Wasted materials also represent a sizable "forgotten" portion of a building's embodied carbon, infrequently measured or accounted for. This session will start from the premise that material utilization cannot be truly improved in isolation, exploring how the pursuit of more sustainable construction is fundamentally interlinked with other measurable outcomes like quality, schedule, cost, and safety—each worthy of optimization in its own right. Drawing on case studies and backed by Forma workflows, the presenters will show how the pursuit of more sustainable construction correlates with project success. They will argue that lean construction, which aims to root out waste in all its forms, offers a pathway to triple bottom-line success, combining positive outcomes for people, the planet, and profit.
