Ever since Autodesk® web services and mobile applications were first introduced—AutoCAD® 360 (formerly AutoCAD® WS) and Autodesk® 360 cloud-based services—Andrzej Jaskulski has run his yearly Autodesk Authorized Author Spring Laboratory which has explored the advantages and disadvantages of this solution. Each year, after tests were complete, he has written a new book for a well-known training series in Poland called AutoCAD-Design Course. In this hands-on-lab, he shares his knowledge and experience on the power of these tools, identifies their strong and weak points, and explains how to avoid problems in individual and concurrent design workflows. Attendees have the opportunity to practice with desktop, mobile, and cloud configurations. They should also be able to assess how effective this solution can be in their business or design office. To benefit from this class, attendees should have a basic knowledge of AutoCAD®.

A carefully planned BIM workflow enabled the design team to create both coordination and structural analysis models for a structure with highly complex geometry extremely fast and efficiently. Using AutoCAD® as a central hub of geometric definitions, the design team was able to communicate seamlessly between Rhinoceros®, Revit®-based software, and SAP2000®. This resulted in the architecture, coordination, and analysis models all matching each other perfectly while also making it easy to track changes and update the models as the design progressed.

With the restricted supply of urban land and its increasing cost, developers are using land for subdivisions that was once considered unsuitable, leading to smaller, more complex projects on restricted footprints. In this class, we will look at numerous case studies of grading small lots that involve the use of AutoCAD® Civil 3D® software (since Release 2007) and grading, corridor, and pipe objects. We will review one person's workflow for getting the job done when Civil 3D is pushed to the extreme.

This class overviews basic setups, installation, and use of A360 Collaboration for Revit cloud service, and will examine how it has been used, advantages and disadvantages, things to consider for remote access and telecommuting, and how to push content to A360 cloud-based collaboration service. We will also touch on topics for organizational structures and project management in conjunction with A360 Collaboration for Revit cloud service and A360. Revit®-based software is recognized as a building design tool for architectural, structural, plumbing and HVAC. At Whitman, Requardt & Associates, our water and wastewater engineers and designers saw the benefits others were experiencing by using Revit and decided to take Revit to the next level—for use designing large-diameter pipe used in water and wastewater process plants. With only AutoCAD® software 2D experience, the switch to Revit identified changes that were needed within our design process and workflow. These changes ultimately led to a better coordinated design for our clients, and Revit is now the tool of choice for many water and wastewater projects. In this class, I demonstrate how engineers and designers in the water and wastewater disciplines at Whitman, Requardt & Associates made use of Revit for more than plumbing.

Capitalizing on Building Information Modeling (BIM) for new buildings is easy—you get to start with a fresh, clean file, and you can lay out everything you need precisely where it is supposed to be. However, what if you are doing an addition, a renovation, or historic preservation? Most of what is important to a structural engineer is probably hidden behind an existing facade or finish. And yet the model must go on. This class offers tips and suggestions for modeling existing structures, including extrapolating information from incomplete data, identifying known and unknown elements, and managing ownership of scope areas.

The BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (BC MoTI) plans transportation networks and provides transportation services and infrastructure for the Province of British Columbia. BC MoTI has transitioned from CAiCE and is now using Civil 3D software for consultant and in-house survey, design, and construction administration workflows. This class will detail the entire Civil 3D implementation process, including a BIM (Building Information Modeling)-based approach for the development of workflows and data handoffs, CAD standardization, subassembly and application customization, training and information dissemination, continued support, and documentation. The end product is a Civil 3D terms-of-reference document that describes all of the requirements for using Civil 3D for survey, design, and construction administration tasks, and is applicable to both Ministry staff and private sector consultants.

Although reinforcement-detailing capabilities of Revit Structure software have been improved from release to release during recent years, a lack of features is preventing users from changing their workflows from 2D detailing with AutoCAD software to a Building Information Modeling (BIM)-concentric workflow in 3D. This class will demonstrate how to overcome these feature gaps by using third-party software. This includes easily distributing rebars along non-planar faces, splitting area reinforcement on large slabs, properly handling revisions, and creating 2D views out of the 3D model. This class will cover how to effectively set up an AutoCAD Civil 3D software project. To manage the size and stability of an AutoCAD Civil 3D software project, we will focus on using data shortcuts and external references in a workflow that makes drawings more manageable. This class will also cover basic tips, tricks, and tools to help keep drawings clean throughout the projects longevity.

As a general contractor, quality control of building layout and verification is necessary to minimize the risk of rework and additional costs or schedule delays. When establishing site control to implement the use of total stations, the team will need to work through a number of challenges and prerequisites. General contractors will need to understand the risk of taking or not taking this responsibility or transferring the risk to third-party quality assurance / quality control teams. Buy-in from the project team and enforcing trades to work on the same controls across a site is important to consistency in layout and verifications. This class will highlight all the prerequisites and challenges that general contractors might typically face when implementing this process, and we’ll document a generic workflow for efficient implementation and best practices. This class will also cover a generic workflow of managing layout using the BIM 360 Layout app, Point Layout software from Revit software, Navisworks software, or AutoCAD DWG™ technology.
