Industrialized construction is becoming a household name within the building industry due to its advantages in improving productivity, quality, accuracy, and efficiency. Applying innovative BIM (Building Information Modeling) workflows and using advanced technologies through all stages from design to production has been one of Nordic Office of Architecture’s most important strategies for success in industrialized construction. In this class, you will gain insight into the Scandinavian way of industrialized construction, and see how a cross-disciplinary collaboration with the software development team of Project Frog has enabled new possibilities to aid in design for manufacturing and assembly (DfMA) and BIM workflows. We will showcase both a large-scale hospital and a smaller-scale set of high-end prefabricated housing. This collaboration reflects on the challenges that architects and engineers have faced in the presence of repeating information, and provides a step-by-step workflow for similar projects (hotels, schools, office buildings, and so on).

Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS) has been involved in the 3D modeling of judicial evidence for homicide cases since 2015. The lab has refined its modeling workflows based on the established use of reality capture (photogrammetry) and BIM (Building Information Modeling) to model artifacts and buildings. Working with the coroner’s office, CIMS has incorporated newer forms of 3D modeling and real-time rendering to establish a standard for displaying digital representations of photographic evidence in a courtroom setting. In this class, we’ll cover our modeling process, starting with analyzing evidence to presenting the data in a user-friendly format. Utilizing Maya software, we’ll model a series of anatomical base meshes that we’ll then manipulate to show inflicted injuries. Next, we’ll texture map the models in Mudbox using photos as reference. Finally, we’ll combine the pieces in Unreal Engine using a template. The addition of blueprints and widgets complete the final product.

With many projects being vastly different from one another, it can be hard to figure out what exactly your BIM (Building Information Modeling) and virtual design and construction (VDC) needs will be for your project. Clash detection and coordination, though not an entirely new concept, has gained traction in recent years. It is a process of discovering the areas or elements that could possibly clash-or, in other words, would occupy the same space. It helps to reveal design conflicts before construction. However, most projects the class presenter has been involved with or has observed do not allocate enough budget for this process, and people still use a conventional 2D-drawing review method for quality assurance / quality control. This class will cover best practices of model clash review during the design phases and methods of tracking the revised/approved status. Today's challenge is how to manage the clashes efficiently besides just locating the clashes, because most tools identify the clash location precisely. Moreover, with recent technologies like virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), we can simulate the walk-through experience for a better communication with clients and team members.

The project consists of a pumped-storage hydroelectric plant in Morocco of 284 million euros. The water stored in an uphill tank will be released into a 3-kilometre transfer line (penstock and galleries) and travel on a natural slope to a tank about 550 meters downhill. A 350 MW hydroelectric plant will be built along the penstock between the 2 reservoirs. The reversible plant will generate electricity when operating in turbine mode and pump water from the lower to the upper reservoir in pumping mode. The system will thus generate renewable energy on demand. The system can be switched between pumping and turbine mode up to 20 times a day, depending on the amount of surplus electricity available or the needs of the Moroccan electricity grid. This class will focus on the plant and the project BIM challenges and goals. I will explain the different actors, their scope of work, their tools, and the different software uses. I will also explain how this new way of working was implemented even if all actors had never completed a BIM project before. The main obstacles of the project, concerning digital and interoperability will be highlighted and explained. The class will review all experiments that have been done to achieve 2 main goals: allow a good model integration in the design software despite their differences and produce correct 2D plans. The class will show how Revit can integrate mechanical files made by Siemens NX through .sat files and Inventor, and the best practices and ways to integrate the models correctly. It will also show the reverse way how the mechanical software can integrate Revit files. It will present a workflow to integrate all models into Navisworks through Revit to be able to do classic 3D coordination. The presentation will conclude with the main benefits of doing 3D models instead of 2D even through a huge and long workflow.

The handover of a 3D model is an old standard practice in the industrial plant market-one that nowadays has to be integrated with the Building Information Modeling (BIM) approach. This presentation will walk you through the journey that an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor took by implementing BIM inside its typical design workflow for an $800 million petrochemical plant in the Middle East. We will demonstrate how to perform civil and structural design using Revit software from conceptual up to construction documentation delivery, and how to take full advantage of 3D modeling for plant project coordination and information management. Thanks to this method of collecting and delivering model data in an efficient manner, it's possible to recognize potential risks, impacts, and conflicts-and to take action in order to bring the project to success. Finally, the class will briefly discuss the project and process BIM implementation benefits, together with the related risks for a general contractor.

We live in a world where our major challenge is to get more and more efficient in the way we work. For long, we have used 2D drawings as basis for communication, planning and construction, but we are heading for a new age where tools and software now allows us to eliminate the use of 2D drawings. In project planning, parametric design is one of the new major tools to increase project efficiency. We will show you how to use parametric models to develop projects faster, how models helps increase collaboration and how to control the process all the way to construction, eliminating the use of 2D drawings.

We will use real project examples from hydropower to show our work with parametric design in Infraworks, Revit and Dynamo, and how we are now conducting a large construction project in Norway without the use of 2D drawings.

This class will cover a total rebar workflow from design to installation in the field. The attendees will see how structural engineers working in Revit software and Tekla save up to 60% of their time by making a good rebar model together with production, not needing to make paper drawings or details (DWG™ and PDF). Come and see how Skanska Norway uses the model to order rebars directly from the supplier, and how the firm tracks the order by using a combination of Solibri and Navisworks software. See how Skanska uses BIM 360 Glue software as an information carrier for assembly on-site instead of drawings by using Navisworks and iConstruct. By using the BIM model in the field, the firm visualizes the construction and reduces rework and time.

The class will show the experience of BIM implementation with Revit in an architecture and engineering firm. The strategy and the investments to do, the possible problem and solutions, the schedule and the goals to achieve. Sticking to the core aspects of the BIM (Building Information Modeling) methodology, RebarCAD 3D helps with modeling rebar in the Revit models. RebarCAD 3D provides an excellent and comprehensive set of tools to perform the crucial task of placing and detailing reinforcement in a Revit model—and manage the revisions—staying true to the BIM philosophy. The industry is moving from mass production to customized solutions, creating a tremendous increase in the demand for custom BIM (Building Information Modeling) software solutions. However, custom solutions are expensive to develop. With Forge, you can build custom BIM configurators with minimum investment and time. We created a custom simulation app for HVAC professionals to produce a sustainable design. The app simulates the performance of design spaces and HVAC systems configuration in the cloud. The class will demonstrate how to use Forge to create a new user-defined office build space. We will elaborate on how the assembly of complex 3D HVAC system configurations can be created. You will see how Revit design automation APIs can construct an accurate intelligent model on the server. The scan-to-BIM (Building Information Modeling) workflow has enabled architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) professionals to efficiently capture, design, and model the as-built environment. But what if we could modify and further automate this process to boost efficiency and insight? This session will be looking at a more refined and automated application of the scan-to-BIM workflow by incorporating laser scanning and point-cloud extraction technologies, as well as creating photorealistic visualizations using scanned data and the design model for more-informed, insightful decision making by conveying highly accurate and realistic design intent.

Until recently, the construction industry has suffered a technology bypass, relying on centuries-old processes to manage projects that are getting more complex and demanding faster execution. This class will discuss how Building Information Modeling (BIM) is making a shift by industrializing construction and setting up off-site assembly lines for manufacturing modules that can just be assembled on-site by a lean team. Case studies will be discussed from several iconic, global project executions where assembly line manufacturing construction processes were deployed for amazingly fast construction, reducing the on-site work, wastages, and costs. The main focus of this class is using BIM to support modular design and industrialized construction. Attendees will learn when and how to set up these assembly lines and the challenges associated with them.

Effective Building Information Modeling (BIM) collaboration cloud environment is one of the key things that emerges as a time-saver in terms of communication and with respect to team members collaborating on model changes in the central cloud that the entire team is accessing. A360 BIM collaborative environment really helps to reduce direct communications and email chasing between clients and BIM service providers because models can be viewed directly in clouds without any software installations on the systems. The quality of a scan-to-BIM (Building Information Modeling) model can vary, depending on the surveyor, instrument used, field conditions, and especially the requirements specified. There are, however, no industry standards templates available to follow. This class will focus on the essentials for developing a scan-to-BIM execution plan, starting from providing and clarifying scope of work to defining LOD requirements. There are a lot of potential risks that we need to identify and highlight when picking up a scan-to-BIM job. We will discuss some of these cases with project examples. Basic tools like Revit software, ReCap software, and Navisworks software can help us through this process of visualizing model mistakes and getting a quality product. We will learn several tips that can assist us while facing the quality control of a model replicated from a point cloud. Those tips will also help us locate where the focus should go in each case.
