Project | 06: Make a model engine piston

This is project 6 of 11 in the model engine project series.

Model, program toolpaths, and machine a piston.

‌

Module overview

Using the model and engineering drawings provided, set up and program toolpaths for the piston.

Piston

Project scenario:
A customer has asked your company to redesign a model engine assembly and to machine a prototype. They have provided engineering drawings of the original piston. This project requires you to model and redesign the piston while maintaining the standard bore, rod location, and internal engine clearances. Use the engineering drawing as a reference for the bore diameter, rod location, and overall dimensions of the part. Consider various stock sizes and shapes to incorporate your unique design and consider any changes to the dome of the piston should be accounted for in the design of the cylinder head component as well.

The company also asked you to prototype the piston. They have provided engineering drawings of the original part as well as a CAD model of the piston. This project requires you to set-up and program toolpaths for the piston provided. Begin with the supplied engineering drawing and CAD model. Use the engineering drawing as a reference to plan tools required and work out any work holding requirements. Consider various stock sizes and shapes and think about the number of operations required to machine the part. Sample process plans, setup sheets, cutting data, and inspection reports are provided but use your judgment, the tools, and machines you have available, and your knowledge to complete the project.
