Demand in InfraWorks Mobility Simulation

Mobility Simulation is an integrated multimodal mobility simulation engine for InfraWorks.

When using Mobility Simulation to create animated simulations of pedestrian movement, you need to apply demand.

The demand is the number of people that want to travel, and the network of roads and pathways is the supply for this demand.

If demand is larger than supply, then there will be congestion.

With two walkways and two areas defined already in InfraWorks Mobility Simulation, and parameters configured, you can apply demand.

From the toolbar, expand Demand and for this example, select Demands.

This opens the Demand Editor dialog.

This dialog features a few tabs for adjusting Directed Demand, Undirected Demand, and Transport Demand.

Directed demand defines a number of trips, with each trip having an explicit origin and destination.

Directed demand can be used for Person-Trips or Vehicle-Trips.

Undirected demand defines a number of trips from each origin, but no explicit destination.

From the Directed Demand Tab, click Add (+).

The New Matrix dialog displays.

Here, you can set up a new directed demand matrix.

However, for now, leave the settings as they are and click OK.

Back in the Demand Editor, a new matrix appears, which you can use to send people from one place to another.

Move the dialog, if needed, so that you can see the walkway in the model.

From column 1 or column 2, click a cell in the matrix.

Notice in the project window, an arrow towards one of the defined areas highlights, indicating the direction of the demand in that cell.

To direct demand—in this case, 100 people—from area 2 to area 1, in the first cell of column 2, enter “100”.
