Convert planning roads to component roads in preparation to create a traffic simulation model in InfraWorks.
Type:
Tutorial
Length:
4 min.
Transcript
00:03
To create a traffic simulation model in InfraWorks using Mobility Simulation,
00:08
all roads must be component roads, which support advanced modeling and analysis features.
00:14
Any planning roads, lightweight roads that use spline geometry, must be converted before a traffic simulation can be calculated.
00:23
Begin with any InfraWorks traffic model open.
00:27
Here, the project drawing was created as an Autodesk model-building example.
00:32
In the model, pick a road, such as Caswell Road.
00:36
The properties display in the panel on the right.
00:40
Select several roads, and you can see that all the roads are planning roads, also called sketch roads.
00:47
You have two options for converting them to component roads, or design roads.
00:52
You can manually convert them beforehand in your InfraWorks model—select a road, right-click and select Convert to Conversion Road—
01:01
or you can simply start the Mobility Simulation mode and let the software do it for you.
01:07
Choosing the second option prompts a notification
01:11
asking if you are sure you want to convert the roads from planning to component roads.
01:16
If you select Yes, InfraWorks converts them for you through a batch process, which is helpful if you are covering a large area.
01:25
Be aware, though, that if you choose this option, you might have to go back and do some manual adjustments.
01:32
Roundabouts are another important consideration and must be converted before creating a traffic simulation model in InfraWorks.
01:41
For this example, while the roundabout might convert to component roads well through the Mobility Simulation process,
01:49
you should convert this to a roundabout entity manually inside InfraWorks, for better accuracy.
01:55
You do this by deleting and recreating the roundabout.
01:59
One at a time, pick the roundabout and the eight road segments that feed it, pressing Delete on your keyboard after each selection.
02:07
To recreate the roundabout, first, manually convert the incoming roads to component roads.
02:14
Select one of the three main feeder roads, then right-click it and select Convert to Component Road.
02:21
A loading dialog appears.
02:24
Repeat this process for the two other main feeder roads.
02:28
One at a time, select and then click and drag the end of each component road,
02:33
so that they all meet in the middle of the roundabout, creating an intersection.
02:39
To convert this to a roundabout, select the intersection,
02:43
and in the Intersection properties panel, under Type, change the Junction Type to Roundabout.
02:49
To manually adjust the circumference of the roundabout, select the roundabout,
02:55
and then click and drag the arrow to adjust the inscribed circle diameter.
03:00
You now have a roundabout entity in your model.
03:04
As you can see, while recreating the roundabout, Caswell Road was converted to a component road.
03:11
Now, use the same steps to manually convert some of the main connecting roads as well.
03:17
For this example, select Salthouse Road, then right-click and select Convert to Component Road.
03:24
A loading dialog appears, then you see the intersection with Caswell Road change in the model.
03:31
Repeat this process for both Reynoldston Close and Sketty Close roads.
03:37
With the roundabout and roads now set as component roads in your InfraWorks traffic simulation model,
03:43
you are now ready to create your traffic study area.
