Create selection sets that allow animators to select multiple controls easily.

Tutorial

Transcript
00:03
We are going to create a few selection sets.
00:06
So the animator can instead use these to select all the controls quickly and easily.
00:13
Plus this will only have the nodes in that they are allowed to touch.
00:17
Let's filter just the controls which all have
00:20
underscore control on the end of their names.
00:23
So now we can see all the controls. Let's select the main body controls.
00:28
So ignore the tours for now
00:31
and the fingers.
00:35
OK? Now go to create
00:37
sets, quick selection set
00:41
and call it body controls.
00:44
Now create another for the left toes
00:48
and the right
00:50
and now the fingers having different sets for each side.
01:00
OK. Clear this.
01:03
So now we have these lists, one for the body
01:06
and one for the fingers and toes.
01:10
We can select all those now
01:14
and right click and go to select set members
01:17
to quickly select all the controls.
01:20
Let's add another set. Now
01:22
call this all controls
01:26
this. Now selects all the controls,
01:28
but it misses the root controls here.
01:31
So we need to include these,
01:34
let's find them
01:36
and simply use a middle mouse button to add them to the all controls list.
01:43
Now we have the main controls selected, we can do something else.
01:48
Go to control tag as controller.
01:52
This adds a new node to each control.
01:55
Let's take a look
01:58
here it is.
01:60
So these nodes help Maya in many ways.
02:03
Firstly,
02:04
they tell meer these are animation controllers which
02:07
means that they will then use GP U acceleration
02:10
so they can speed up your workflow and the playback,
02:14
you can also use them to set up custom pick walking too.
02:17
Plus under the visibility mode, drop down box,
02:21
you will see that you can set each control so it's always visible
02:25
or it inherits its parents' visibility.
02:27
You can also set it to be invisible unless your mouse pointer is close to it
02:32
like this,
02:34
which is a great option for complex rigs with lots of controls.
