Step-by-step Guide
In InfoWorks WS Pro, allocating demand to nodes throughout a water supply network is crucial to the accuracy of simulations. Because consumer demand varies by time of day, day of the week, and time of year, demand categories provide 24-hour profiles for a particular type of consumer.
The demand diagram contains categories that define the demand pattern for an individual type of consumer. This example assigns a demand category and specific consumption properties to a node for a planned housing development.
- Copy Session 5.wspt into your Database.
- From the Model Group window, drag-and-drop BridgeNet into the workspace to open the GeoPlan.
- In the Scenarios toolbar, expand the Select scenario drop-down.
- Select a new scenario that has a new node linked to the existing network.
To open the Demand Diagram window, which must be open:
- From the Model Group window, expand Demand Diagram Group.
- Select BridgeTown ADAW.
To define the demand category for the node representing the future housing development:
- From the Tools toolbar, select Properties.
- In the GeoPlan, select the new node.
- From the Properties panel, in the Demand By Category option, select More (…).
Note: A demand category can be defined in one of three ways. This example defines demand per property.
- In the Demand By Category dialog box, expand the Demand Category drop-down and select DOMESTIC.
Note: This list is populated by the categories contained in the current Demand Diagram, which is running in the background.
- Expand the Category Type drop-down and select Property.
- In the Number Of Properties field, enter an estimation of the number of properties in the category, such as “100”.
- In the Specific Consumption field, enter an estimation of consumption for each property, such as “400”.
- Click OK.
Notice in the GeoPlan, the node shape updates to a star, representing the new allocation of demand.
To verify the scenario and commit the changes to the database:
- In the Model Group window, under Session 05, right-click BridgeNet and select Commit changes to database.
- In the Commit changes to database dialog box, under Comments, enter a description of changes made.
- Click OK.
IMPORTANT: To run accurate simulation models, it is critical to allocate appropriate demand categories to objects within a model group.
