Sketch a traffic study area in InfraWorks

Sketch a traffic study area in InfraWorks to use for Mobility Simulation.

00:03

In InfraWorks, you can sketch a traffic study area to analyze traffic flow through intersections,

00:09

which you can later use to display color-coded traffic analysis results and generate traffic simulation animations.

00:17

Begin with the InfraWorks Mobility Simulation model open and navigate to the area you want to study.

00:23

For this example, the roundabout and major roads have already been converted to component roads, also called design roads.

00:31

If your roads have not been converted, select each planning road, right-click, and select Convert to Component Road.

00:39

Alternatively, or if you miss any, the program will attempt to convert them for you all at once after you create the study area.

00:48

From the ribbon, on the Analyze tab, expand the Transportation drop-down and click Traffic Simulation.

00:56

The traffic simulation mode begins, and component roads are highlighted in the InfraWorks model.

01:03

Now, click points in your model to draw a polygon for your traffic study area.

01:10

As you draw the study area, demand zones are automatically added where the traffic study area crosses component roads.

01:18

Demand zones are origins or destinations for trips, and they appear as light blue boxes within the drawing model.

01:26

Be aware that light blue boxes only appear over component roads, and not over planning roads.

01:33

When you are done, double-click to complete the selected traffic flow area.

01:38

A panel for the Traffic Study Area displays.

01:43

A Traffic Simulation confirmation dialog box also appears,

01:47

asking if you want to convert the planning roads inside the traffic study area to component roads.

01:53

For this example, click Yes.

01:56

A loading dialog appears as the roads are converted in your drawing, reporting progress.

02:01

Once that is done, you can zoom in to check that all roads were converted properly

02:07

and that demand zones appear at each crossing location.

02:10

In this case, everything is correct.

02:13

As you have seen, sketching a traffic study area in InfraWorks to use for Mobility Simulation is a straightforward process.

02:22

Now, you are ready to create a traffic simulation animation in your InfraWorks model.
