Success Story

DBMV’s– Plant 3D Piping Traceability

DBMV’s– Plant 3D Piping Traceability

Customer challenge

DBMV was originally engaged on the project to assist in the design by producing traceable pipe isometrics to aid with the fabrication and installation of pipe spools on site. During this process, the client wanted to track all materials, joints, welds, and spools through the procurement, fabrication, NDT (Nondestructive Testing), and on-site installation process to minimize disruption to production and supply chain. This required DBMV to track every single item with unique identification.

Project goals

The main challenges faced by the DBMV team were: 1. Identifying all varieties of piping connections within the project (threaded, flanged, welded…) 2. Maintaining different line number formats within the project 3. Internally customizing Plant 3D while maintaining critical path activities 4. Working across multiple offices in multiple international locations

Solution

DBMV was able to leverage the existing traceability functions within Autodesk’s Plant 3D to create database values for all traceable components including welds, flange connections, virtual clamps, etc. DBMV can now see how the joint codes are represented within the isometric drawing and joint table. The calculation properties in Plant 3D have enabled DBMV to maintain multiple line numbering formats within a project.

Business outcome

By implementing the additional traceability on to the piping isometrics and through the Plant 3D database, our client was able to produce a centralized inventory of materials and welds and simplify their supply chain management. This allowed the team to track the number of materials, the status of those materials, the inventory levels and to identify exactly what materials were delaying the hook-up of spools on site.

Conclusion

Although we had to absorb hundreds of hours on the front-end to customize Plant 3D to our client's needs, we are already starting to reap the rewards, not only because of the positive customer feedback and the reduction to on-site working hours, but also because of our constant interest in replicating the same traceability in future projects.

Increased Efficiency in Engineering and Design

KAMCO, a manufacturing company for agricultural machinery, sought to find an optimal solution for their customers' needs. They have collaborated closely with farmers and recognized their areas of difficulties - a cono-weeder machine. KAMCO then found that they needed to look for a one point solution to overcome their critical design requirements for this cono-weeder machine which requires solid modeling, sheet metal as well as standard frames.
