MPG Accelerates Furniture Creation and Manufacturing Process with Autodesk and Claranet´s CAD/CAM Solutions

Customer challenge

MPG is a Portuguese company founded in 1971 in the production of office furniture, which invests in the design and production of contemporary style pieces of its own brand for work spaces with different configurations - from open space and mixed offices, to library spaces , universities and home office. MPG's offer is based on more than ten lines of furniture designed in the company, which can be customized according to the needs of each client and the identity of each organization. The daily work involves product and interior designers, architects and artists, in order to develop functional and innovative solutions, for which the company takes advantage of the potential of technological tools - from the conception and design process, to the manufacturing and installation.

Project goals

The significant growth of MPG's business, mainly due to its internationalization, brought the need to optimize the use of digital tools to support the design and production processes, to obtain more speed and more quality in creation of the products. In the design department, it was necessary to reorganize and increase the database with detailed documentation on the 2D/3D product models already created. It would thus be possible to better reuse the work developed and speed up the development of new products from the standard ranges, or from the possible variations to create within each range. Given the increase in the workflow, MPG also wanted to standardize workflows, adapt work plans to the manufacturing methods and procedures required on the so-called “factory floor”. Sometimes, the different stages of production needed to introduce small compensations, adaptations and modifications to the plans, which added extra time to the process and, in some cases, loss of raw material.

Solution

The solution made available by Claranet had two components: a technical one, through add-ons to the CAD/CAM tools provided by the Autodesk Product Design & Manufacturing Collection; and a procedural one, achieved through the improvement of work processes, especially in the design phase. The first step was to create families of intelligent 2D and 3D models of the products, with the participation of Claranet technicians in parameterization and programming. The adoption of standardized ways of working, so that all those involved in the design room followed the same work philosophy, was another of the changes introduced. The implementation of this solution took place over two months and involved about a dozen people from MPG, with Claranet's choice being justified by its knowledge of the company's needs.

Business outcome

From then on, each new project included all the necessary information, in terms of dimensions and variations in characteristics (accessories, configurations, etc.), with the design of each product being better adapted to the available manufacturing methods. In addition to creating more agile collaboration processes, it was possible to transmit new work concepts to the employees of this department, allowing them to further enhance the digital tools used. Claranet's participation in this project focused mainly on providing consultancy services, monitoring the software implementation and configuration processes, as well as training MPG employees.

Conclusion

Thanks to the continued use of the same technological tools and the new work methods designed by Claranet's technicians, the employees of the MPG design room began to reuse the models of each product more quickly and accurately, contributing to significantly speed up the design and production processes of furniture pieces. It is now possible to use a standard model to create different models within the same range, as well as to obtain variants with different dimensions and specifications. Allied to the 3D models, there is now the corresponding pre-programmed 2D documentation, making the documentation quickly available for the production of products. Production technicians now use the plans that come to them from the design office with confidence and, following all specifications, it is possible to build the final product as designed.

BIM Management and Coordination for Project Owners

Limsen Consulting is a Lisbon-based BIM consultancy that provides support to Project Owners who want to contract BIM projects but do not have the necessary internal resources to manage the BIM requirements and audit the information delivered. The added value of BIM is already evident for designers and contractors, and they are increasingly known by Owners. In recent years, the number of developers interested in this methodology for the development of their work has increased. Faced with the most common problems in the construction industry, such as time and budget overruns, most of Limsen's customers look to BIM for the answer to these problems. Developing projects in BIM does help all parties foresee problems and manage them more efficiently. However, it is necessary to make customers aware of the importance of setting up realistic coordination times between disciplines, since the models uncover most coordination problems that are usually only found in the construction phase.
