Perfection Reached in UK Reynolds Building By Using Autodesk’s Products

Customer challenge

CINFAB LLC has previously undertaken various building projects for the University of Kentucky Campus, underscoring the significance of their reputation in this venture. As one of the leading Sheet Metal subcontractors in the region, the client's stature is at stake for this particular project. Given that the building already exists, careful consideration of the specifications, materials, and insulation is essential, accounting for the building's current status.

The primary challenge in this project revolves around coordination, compounded by the presence of extensive scan files serving as the architectural and structural 3D model. These files are voluminous and pose a considerable challenge in terms of handling. Difficulties have surfaced in aligning with the Engineer's design model or the 2D layout, particularly when considering intricate project specifications such as proper insulation, materials, fittings, accessories, and more.

Project goals

  • Develop a fabrication-ready model from the design model.
  • Ensure seamless BIM coordination.
  • Minimize rework in the presence of existing site conditions.
  • Create MAJ files for efficient prefabrication of ductwork.

Solution

MODELING

The team at Pinnacle went through the existing condition thoroughly to understand the situation at the original site. We then reviewed the design file to check if it suited the site condition or not. After reviewing the design model with the existing site condition, we moved forward and started preparing the fabrication-level model.

COORDINATION

The most challenging part was initially fitting the services into the existing condition and then coordinating them. The BIM 360 platform helped us use the central file option, which kept both parties updated simultaneously. The Autodesk Construction Cloud server served as a coordination tool, creating a common data environment for all stakeholders.

PREFABRICATION AND INSTALLATION DRAWINGS

The Revit fabrication tool helped us obtain accurate Bills of Materials (BOM) and MAJ files, facilitating the prefabrication process. This tool also assisted in preparing installation drawings, including sections that aided the on-site team in the installation of ductwork.

Business outcome

Utilizing BIM to assess how new services would function in the existing site conditions resulted in several business outcomes, including:

  • Minimization of rework due to existing site conditions.

  • Cost optimization.

  • Streamlined prefabrication of ductwork.

  • Real-time tracking of updates from various stakeholders.

  • Enhanced communication among stakeholders through a common data environment.

Conclusion

Pinnacle assisted the client by implementing the BIM process to elevate the quality of work. This resulted in an almost perfect prefabricated product, significantly reducing manual efforts on-site. The Common Data Environment provided by Autodesk played a pivotal role in addressing the intricate coordination challenges associated with an existing property.

Founded by Roy Pence and Dale Pence in 1949, Pence/Kelly Concrete, LLC is dedicated to the fundamental principles of honesty and hard work. For six decades, their team has been anchored in Salem, Oregon, providing the Pacific Northwest with the best in structural concrete excellence. The company’s leadership team is comprised of Dave Hays, President and Paul Schulz, Partner.Pence/Kelly’s expertise in structural concrete work spans the construction industry spectrum, from small tilt-up or foundation packages to multi-million dollar elevated structures. Their team has built both simple warehouses and complicated research facilities. They have exceeded client expectations for excellence in concrete throughout California, Oregon, Washington and Alaska. Some of the challenges as follows such as collaboration issue, huge project area to be modeled in a limited time frame; required to create many families for execution, able to shop drawing submissions as per tight schedule, able to grid coordination issues for the separate building, three buildings were part of the same project, making the file size larger and complex to handle, the short time frame for model submission and challenging to coordinate buildings as the admin building connected CCO-5 and CCO-6.
