Revit Plug-in Development and Automation for CBWD and Tag Arrangement

Customer challenge

A building project involves many stakeholders and work schedule is tight, for example, there is always insufficient time allowed to create CBWD. Our customer Lik Kai, a Multi-discipline engineering services provider for buildings and associated services, is looking for solutions to increase the productivity of other daily work and deliver the best building quality to their customers.

Project goals

A faster and accurate way to accelerate the daily workflow for CBWD and tag arrangement. CBWD refers to Combined Builder’s Work Drawings, it is an essential part to ensure all services coordination in a construction work, to help avoiding clashes with individual MEP services and the building structure. However, it would be time consuming and involve human error to prepare the produce the openings in the building structure to each individual services, and then labelling them in a well order and arrangement within one drawing.

Solution

In order to provide with Lik Kai the right solution, Forida offered a customized Autodesk Revit Plug-in and Autodesk Dynamo script to enhance existing workflow for create and control opening elements in Autodesk Revit and generate CBWD. The Autodesk Revit Plug-in can generate and control opening elements. It supports to create openings needed for ducts, pipes, cable trays and conduits where intersect wall, floors, roofs, ceilings, beams or columns, etc. It processes interference check information between current, linkedor IFC files to get locations, type, and depth of clashes, applies the predefined cut offsets and offsets for joining openings, and then automatically fills in the Autodesk Revit models with just one clink. And the Autodesk Dynamo script can tag Autodesk Revit family and arrange the auto leader. It also allows manual alignment for each tag if needed.

Business outcome

By implementing customized Autodesk Revit plug-in and Autodesk Dynamo Script, Lik Kai can create CBWD with well arrange tag according to their standard within a day which normally takes a few days before. This customized development has enhanced the CBWD workflow in term of lead-time and quality

Conclusion

Autodesk also support through Autodesk Revit API and Autodesk Dynamo to allow developers adding functionality using External Commands and External Applications to fit customized needs.
