Success Story
Alstom SA is a French multinational rolling stock manufacturer operating worldwide in rail transport markets, active in the fields of passenger transportation, signaling, and locomotives. Alstom as part of a joint venture will provide rolling stock and signaling and infrastructure solutions, alongside 20 fully automated 4-wagon trains, the state-of-the-art CBTC Urbalis 400 solution, Iconis safety and control systems, and the Hesop energy saving system for the first section of The Athens Metro Line 4. AML4 is the first public project ever in Greece to use BIM technology and Alstom is driving this forward.
AutoCAD was the main design software of the company in Greece. However, the radical development of projects with BIM procedures and the obligation to use BIM procedures, deemed essential the upgrade of the knowledge of the company's working groups and the adaptation of their working methods to the new challenging conditions. Shifting the tool from 2D drawings, to 3D models, which enable remote collaboration and model sharing, was identified as the key capabilities needed for such a project. As a result, Autodesk Revit was chosen as the most appropriate solution for the transition to the new working methods and the fulfillment of immediate and future demands of the company. OIONEI took over to upskill the personnel with their specialized training for Autodesk Revit including appropriate guidance to effective workflows.
Meeting the new projects' needs and gaining the ability of successful collaboration with other disciplines involved in a BIM project are required by Alstom engineers in Greece.
The AML4 project tender requirements include enhanced collaboration from all disciplines involved. The key actions needed are: Sharing 3D models of the project, Live collaboration, Clash detection, Electrical 3d models, Management and processing of systems and circuits. The personnel engaged in this project, has to be able to understand and use the BIM practices and tactics on the Revit software that serve the above needs.
Setting up teams and consolidating their working models upon managers approvals accelerates the development of the construction documents.
Collaborating with Alstom BIM Coordinator Ifigeneia Zachariou, ATC Oionei suggested a targeted and specialized training course for learning Autodesk Revit focusing on content in order to meet the company's needs.
Project organization with view templates and filters, Insert and Link Revit and CAD files, Collaboration practices with Copy / Monitor and Worksets, management and processing of systems and circuits, Clash detection, Creation of specific Families, Creation Project Template, Creation of Sheets, are some of the topics covered in the training.
Having been trained by authorized Autodesk Training Center Oionei, the Alstom team is now able to work more productively and collaborate effectively with other engineers' disciplines. The working model is gradually upgrading and is able to support BIM procedures which are required for the current and upcoming projects. The upskilling of the personnel secures the engagement of the company in the project.
Hearing from our customers how they find the solutions we suggest and the effectiveness of OIONEI’s training packages is our reward!
For this specific engagement, Alstom BIM Coordinator Ifigeneia Zachariou mentioned:
"BIM technology is a new tool in design and construction. Alstom has already applied BIM in other projects in Dubai, Paris, Montreal, Toulouse or Singapore but Athens Metro Line 4 is the first project in Greece to use BIM technology. Alstom engineers needed to be able to support both the design and construction needs of such a large scale project. 9 Engineers of different disciplines among Alstom team followed the intensive training. The main target has been to focus on the design field of each trainee (Signaling, Power supply, infrastructure etc.) reflecting also the needs of the project for immediate implementation. At this moment, Revit has been the main design tool for Alstom systems in Athens Metro Line 4 and consequently in the upcoming projects."

Transition to Autodesk BIM Solutions
Established in 1987, ENOIA SA is a multi-disciplinary engineering and project development consultancy company with a proven track record of over 35 years in engineering excellence. The Group’s global network includes engineering excellence centers in Athens, Cairo, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Chennai, providing a comprehensive range of services in diverse markets and industries in the fields of Energy, Water/Infrastructure and Industrial.AutoCAD was the main design software for the architecture and civil engineering department of the company in Greece. However, the need to collaborate with other departments within the company that had already adopted 3d modelling processes in design, combined with the global trend of modernizing projects using BIM and the mandatory application of these processes, confirmed the necessity of upgrading the staff's knowledge and adapting working methods to the new and challenging conditions.
