Speaker
HIDEAKI TAKIMOTO: So let's start my presentation. My name is Takimoto. I appreciate your attention today. The session title is "Design Build +ACC + Data Driven = Accurate Communication Lead and Judgment." I'm confident that what you are about to hear will be both engaging and enlightening.
You probably seen this before, but let me show you this again [INAUDIBLE]. The agenda for this session will be based on these six items.
Introduction-- so I will introduce myself. I've been with Takenaka for 18 years now. I've been in charge of construction manager and PM for shop totalling-- a total of 10 projects.
That kind of cooperation is design build company, so I spent most of the time on construction site. However, since ACC covers information that come from the whole project, not just construction, I hope today's session will help others from different departments as well.
I started working on BIM in 2010. Point solutions to the problem in response or response to objectives. Utilize different content and purposes. When I was head of PM, for chapter links, I utilized for deciding things, and improving the efficiency of modern.
When I was in the position of construction manager, I used BIM and information for construction planning and cost management. Looking back now. I realized I was so focused on completing the project. Then I wonder if I could have used that data more efficiently for other purposes as well.
And I started using CDE in 2018 and started using ACC in 2021. This time, I would like to share the initiative of ACC, why I'm so focused on CDE and ACC now. I would like to share here the circumstances behind this in Japan.
More than 15 years ago, everyone worked hard to finish their project, working overtime to complete their tasks. This may be an old fashioned idea, but I believe that a lot of individual skills are gained through experience. And people from that era were like the goat, in that they could handle drawings, construction management, and finance on their own.
Since then, issues such as overwork have become a problem. And the division of engineers had progress. And this year, the overtime limit has finally been reduced to 45 hours per month, making work efficiency and division of engineers a major issue. How does the number 45 feel in your country? I think it's different for each.
In Japan, you go there to achieve the number. The development of ICT and tools has become active. And BIM and CDE also one of them.
At present, the division of engineer is progressing in terms of construction management and construction drawing management. Even so, I think it will still be difficult to achieve this number of 45. And the division of engineers will continue to progress.
Division engineer is sometimes referred to as a specialization. But in reality, principally do not have the experience that our seniors have in their evening hours. Personally, I believe that due to the division of engineering, the skill of each person are degrading.
One way to address a drop in individual skills is to boost efficiency using BIM. I think cutting-edge initiative have been announced in this regard with a AU. And I think so as well. And I think we should all compete against each other.
Even in such a situation, automation and parametric modeling and AI become more common with machine learning in mind. I will show how can I utilize and visualize data better within ACC. By doing so they will help each engineer skills as education.
My goal is to explore if this can help improve individual skills, also about what ACC is trying to solve communication problems. Which is important for successful division of engineer? I will also share that we are taking on the challenge-- how to make accurate judgment while procurement [INAUDIBLE] it's coming among building owners, designers, and constructors, which is currently an issue at our company.
Let me speak about Takenaka Corporation. This image shows drawing on buildings from the time the company was founded in 1610. And here are the tools used in ceremonies. And we have to the museum with a collection of tools like this. So please stop by when you come to Japan. And I also had that it was connected to general Oda Nobunaga, who is known to everyone in Japan.
Takenaka Corporation placed great importance on the spirit of mastermind-- code, Toyro spirit. Toyro is master builder. Toyro is particular about his tools, knows their performance well, and uses them appropriately. This spirit has been passed down to people involved in BIM today. And Takenaka is experimenting with various software based on ideas of open BIM. This method expands our knowledge, but it is difficult to master different kinds of softwares. Other characteristics of Takenaka Cooperation-- architectural focus and design-build specialists, et cetera.
This session's objective is, first, how to deploy ACC. Second, how ACC works. So the last not the least, connect data and workflow. This session will be from the construction side, but I think it can be applied to any load in terms of data utilization. Takenaka's data-driven.
Our company advocated for open BIM, reading model data using IFC. Manage the latest PDF information for drawings, et cetera. And perform task management, such as progress records.
Takenaka Corporation uses other CDE software ahead of ACC. We have introduced this CDE software to about 70% of our project. And we believe that we are gradually cultivating the soil and literacy to work with the latest and correct information. In addition, we have established data-driven design build as the next step of open BIM. We are aiming to work with data and to implement design and construction based on conversation and communication.
So next step is to create a data-driven design build. RealWorks in done with data and design and construction is carried out based on compensation and communication. We believe that CDE will be foundation for this.
Why Takenaka adopts ACC? Key targets for Takenaka's data-driven-- project management efficiency in construction; high construction efficiency; business process transformation through data-driven, like, customer satisfaction survey with 100%; no critical quality and safety issue.
Not only our company, but the whole of Japan in is in the same situation. The leader key is members account for about half of the roles of people who have left their jobs. While the reason for leaving a job is misunderstanding in communication with superiors, managers can notice mistakes made by members based on past experience.
But what are inexperienced members doing wrong? It's a common occurrence that we don't even know. Also, if members repeat what the manager thinks is important, managers feel like, how many times do I have to repeat the same things?
On the other hand, the members do not understand how important the manager's points are. How many times? I don't know what's important, some members feel. Relationships often break down due to this misunderstanding.
Data is everything. What is data? These data are items often used in BIM. Of course, we will utilize this data. But having used CDEs such as ACC, I feel that we can now solve the problems that we have solved while proceeding with the project by using issues, statuses, et cetera, as data.
We are still looking for way to utilize the built part of ACC, which is the core of this presentation. In this context, the information handled by ACC is larger in regard to decision making and status management. Although the specific information in this area should be kept confidential, we believe that it is a non-competitive and collaborative area in terms of how it can be used. In terms of information regards to CDE, we believe that the granularity of information, rather than the content of the information, should be standardized so that it can be used universally, rather than a specific item by the project owner, designer, general contractor, speciality, contractor, et cetera.
How do you mainly use ACC to solve problems? I will now explain the overall concept and specific cases. I would like to explain the core of examples of ACC utilization that I'm implementing this session.
Up left, the first step in both BIM and CDE is to establish the purpose of use. Up right, once the objectives are set, we compare the software to be used. What I tried to keep in mind here is not insist on using ACC for all functions. I try to look at it from a fraud perspective.
Bottom right, once the tools are decided, we will use which part of the conversational workflow and tools to be used. How do we visualize it? Bottom left, status and various data are set according to purpose of use. Basically, in the process of setting the goal to understanding the tools, to organization the workflow, to status data settings, this is not PDCA cycle. But we believe that by repeating this cycle many times, we can make the tool easier to utilize.
Plus I will explain. goal-setting, organized with a process mapper that show the people in both on the vertical axis and the time and that time series on the horizontal axis. After approaching the objective you want to solve, [INAUDIBLE] the two objectives and information necessary for the solution, taking into account the preparation.
So important thing here is that [INAUDIBLE] does and fraud and [INAUDIBLE] include that [INAUDIBLE], which is important to share this information with those involved. After finishing organizing, we will organize the current problems and solution for each item. I explained it with a little case.
The next step is to understand. What is shown here is the chart also compares the various software tools currently available for submitter workflow. The vertical axis shows the selection point submitter workflows such as those. The horizontal shows the evaluation of various such as paper and BIM360 review, et cetera. A is cooperatively of lighting. And B is management of the circulated units, et cetera, which are the key points. Particularly important are A.
If you simulate in your setting [INAUDIBLE]. And B, management of submitter workflow. This part is a strong point for BIM360 review and ACC submitters-- the reason why the BIM360 and ACC are selected.
As a workflow organization, the vertical axis shows what is the ACC function used? How to prepare Revit object data. Who will do it and when? What about other collaborations?
The horizontal shows conventional workflows. The example shown here is actual workflow for inspecting a complete model. It is important to set the optimal workflow pose a problem to be solved, but it is also effective to implement it in a certain way. We believe that by doing this many times, we will find the overall optimum.
Other status settings-- for example, I'm setting the status for instructing model, modification, and management progress. Purple is correction instruction by manager. Orange is fixed by operator. Green is confirmed the fixed management. It is important to set the status according to the purpose. You want to manage. And the purpose you want to keep [INAUDIBLE].
What is currently shown is an example of some mixture. Who has a book? Who approved and when are also important data.
Data-driven challenge. This session-- two items-- one, first, education-- learn tools, improvement member skills by visualize data, gain insight. Second, communication-- visualize needs from owner, visualize workforce progress.
I will explain what I actually worked on-- first, education-- visualization data that is created in submitter workflow. We have set two goals for this submitter workflow or delivery node. One is digitalizing submitter workflow. Second is education members.
Furthermore, education has two meanings-- Skill improvement with insight, learning tools and improving skills with members insight by visualization [INAUDIBLE]. The conventional submittals workflow of delivery nodes is carried out as this-- member submit for check. Next, manager point out mistakes. Next, member correct the point.
I think that the part where the manager points out and the member makes correction is a waste of time. But this will happen at least on one time. This happened due to a lack of members skill. So we tried educating members by combating and visualizing the point base into data.
Conventionally, we post Sticky Notes on important area or areas to be checked. When using it with ACC, data on important-- data on important area and areas to be checked with pointers.
Regarding the comparison of tools for submitter workflow, we decided to use ACC as based on the comparison table explained earlier. The evaluation of each two change slightly due to different target to be handled, but there was no big difference.
Walkthrough organization is-- during submittal process from administrator to member to manager, if any point are raised, they will be dissolved with some members and then returned to administrator. We built a workflow using submission saturation step and issue status.
Status setting-- this time, we will use the fingers feature to manage and visualize the following context of data-- member name and comment on the point made, and progress of correction to indications. And the status will be changed as led to orange to gray.
Here is an example of using Power BI to visualize the members' names and comments about the issue. The top left shows the change in the number of questions asked. And by visualization, we can see that number of question leads have decreased by 75% since the start.
We have decided on two [INAUDIBLE] for implementing this initiative. One, word cloud-- this shows keyword that shows we care about. Two, the number of questions. This is used for discussion between managers and members. With this concept, the member gets skills, then the question is getting decreased. This is education, what we did. I think this idea is basic and can be applied to other things.
When utilizing data, I believe that ACC has functions that are clearly different from other tools-- meeting and insight. Both two can handle various data. I believe that the range of ACC will be expanded by its usage.
Why we use meetings? In the past, minutes were created in Word. To-do lists were created in Excel when the progress was managed. With the meeting function, we can create minutes for meetings. Then we link-- we can link the data within ACC. And the status will be linked automatically. Also, the meeting can create to-do lists from each meeting automatically.
Utilize the meeting more. We create a dashboard so that we can track the item with timeline. Why we use-- why we utilize insights? Insights is a dashboard that displays the data you have in ACC and the tools you are working with. For example, PowerPoint, Power BI, Holobuilder, and Revit. Talking about Holobuilder by adding [INAUDIBLE] car inside, even the owner also can check 360-degree camera easy.
Up to this point, I have mainly-- up to this point, I have mainly explained ACC. But should all problems be solved, use using ACC? It seems to be my answer is no. We consider ACC to be a problem-solving tool.
Currently, we are using Insight. Data acquired by various tools, data that is linked to ACC is displayed as it is Insight. [INAUDIBLE] is not lined to ACC, The analysis results are displayed at decision criteria via RBI or other tools. In addition, after comparing tools, according to the purpose of use, if ACC tool is optimal, it can be destroyed by utilizing the function of assets, et cetera.
We are experimenting with the use of ACC's insight as protocol and aggregation point for data through actual project. I will explain what I actually worked on. Two-- communication-- linkage of data for decision-m making and progress management.
We have set three goals for this linkage of data for decision-making and progress management. One, cost sharing of specification decision time; two, appropriate management of some meta workflow status; Three, visualization of specification decision status into model.
Our company has several projects which they are the reason for delay is delay in procurement. Two, design change beyond that deadline; three, communication error. So we challenge of visualizing progress based on the data.
So we challenge or visualize the-- so we challenge our visualizing progress based on the building owner's need to be on time delivery. Communication is the key to make maintaining that process. Communication is a key to maintaining the process.
Regarding the comparison of tools, process software to create construction schedule for Excel, et cetera, that management the drawings process. Also, these are tools for each purpose. There is currently no optimal tools, including ACC.
Due to the purpose of management, we determined that it was not possible to complete the process with a single tool. So we select tools according to the purpose and consider the arrangement of various tools with data linkage as core.
As a workflow organization, one, creation of construction schedule; two, creating a drawing process chart; three, create step diagram; four, sharing coordination with related parties; five, construction progress management. Submit a workflow; six, sharing and coordination with related parties.
Data setting this time managed by submitter schedule. Red is delayed. Blue is coming in a week. Green is coming in three weeks. Other status-- low and trades and progress and progress are given us as statuses.
How many tasks does a leader have? What is the overall progress of summiters is being visualized. Here is a link that-- here is a data link that will-- here is a data link that will have communication and project progress.
The main area is [INAUDIBLE]. From top left, drawing process management using Excel. Some data management is done using ACC submitters. The schedule is from [INAUDIBLE]. Objective data is from data exchange.
The above two future plants. But we use ACC forms for specification and ACC asset for construction progress. Organized data using query and visualize it using Power BI. By displaying this data on the inside dashboard, we are creating an environment that is easy for all concerned parties to build.
Future plan-- I'll summarize. We believe that it is important to implement this cycle as many times as possible based on the purpose. Setting objectives, understanding the tool, organizing the workflow, setting status. I believe that it is best to improve the method concerned on ACC, such as this one, and to improve the operating skills of the people involved and the skills of each individual.
In addition, as we increase the number of examples of its use, it is important to-- we believe that the strength of utilization-- we believe that the strength of utilizing ACC-- we believe that the strength of utilizing ACC will be demonstrated by aligning the granularity of each type of data, and thinking about how to link them together.
We believe that this area of usage is an area of collaboration. And we would like to think about it together with you. We believe that Autodesk AI awaits us. After we utilize and accumulate these granular and structured data, We hope, continue to share information with the aim of achieving this goal. Thank you.
