Insert fields in a layout title block

Insert fields in a title block for information that is expected to change and can later be updated automatically.

00:04

Switch to the D size layout.

00:07

Here you see a bordered sheet with a standard T block as

00:10

well as a viewport that contains a view of the floor plan.

00:14

You can use fields to add information in the title block.

00:18

For example, zoom into the lower right corner of the title block

00:23

spaces have already been provided for the name of the person who drew the sheet,

00:28

the date and the scale.

00:30

While you could simply enter text using fields,

00:34

enables you to automate the process.

00:37

That way if any of these values change, the title block will update automatically

00:44

on the annotate ribbon

00:46

in the text panel,

00:47

start the multi line text tool again

00:50

and select the annotative textile. If it is not already selected,

00:55

then specify the corners of the text bounding box

00:58

so that it fits inside the area for the scale

01:02

on the ribbon

01:04

in the style panel, make sure the text height is set to 1/8 inch

01:10

since the title block already indicates that this is the

01:13

scale all you need to add is a field,

01:17

right click and choose insert field.

01:20

This is another way to open the field dialogue

01:24

in the field names, list, select object. If it is not already selected,

01:30

then click the select object button.

01:34

The dialog box temporarily disappears.

01:37

Select the viewport border

01:40

back in the dialogue

01:41

in the object type field. Verify that you selected a viewport object

01:47

in the property list.

01:48

You now see a list of viewport properties, select custom scale.

01:54

Then

01:55

in the format column, select use scale name,

01:59

then click OK to close the dialogue

02:02

and then close the text editor.

02:06

Repeat these steps to add the name of the person who drew the sheet.

02:10

Start the multi line text tool again

02:13

specify the corners of the text bounding box so that it fits inside the drawn by area.

02:19

Make sure the text height is set to 1/8 inch.

02:22

Then on the ribbon

02:24

click field to open the field dialogue,

02:28

expand the field category, drop down and select document

02:33

in the field names, list select author,

02:37

leave the format unchanged,

02:39

click OK to close the dialogue

02:42

and then close the text editor

02:45

since the author's name has not yet been set in the drawing properties, dialogue.

02:50

This field appears as a sequence of four hyphens

02:54

once that drawing property is filled in.

02:56

However, the field will update to report the actual data.

03:01

Add one more field to report the date.

03:04

Start the multi line text tool again

03:07

specify the corners of the text bounding box.

03:11

Make sure the text height is set to 1/8 inch

03:14

and then open the field dialogue,

03:17

expand the field category, drop down and select date and time.

03:23

Then in the field names list,

03:25

you can select the date that is most appropriate for your situation

03:30

for this exercise. Choose create date.

03:34

Then in the examples list, choose the desired date format.

03:39

For this example, choose the month, day, year format

03:44

and then click. OK.

03:46

Finally close the text editor.

03:49

As you have seen fields are very powerful fields can be used

03:54

to display data that may change during the life cycle of a drawing

03:58

and fields update automatically whenever you regenerate or save the drawing.
