Specify dimension layer and create linear dimensions

Specify the dimension layer and create linear dimensions.

00:04

You can create linear dimensions to indicate the length of an object.

00:08

Linear dimensions can be horizontal,

00:11

vertical or aligned with an object.

00:13

And you can control the layer on which the dimension is created

00:18

on the home ribbon in the layers panel note that layer zero is the current layer.

00:24

When you expand the layer drop down,

00:26

you can see that the drawing already includes a layer called dimension.

00:30

Someone else already created this layer and assigned it. The color cyan

00:36

dimensions are created using the current dimension style

00:39

on the annotate ribbon.

00:41

In the dimensions panel,

00:43

you can see that annotative is the current dimension style.

00:47

You could expand this drop down and choose a different style or create a new style

00:54

in the dim layer override. Drop down.

00:57

The program is currently set to create new dimensions

00:60

on the current layer which is layer zero,

01:03

expand this drop down and select the dimension layer

01:07

so that any new dimensions will be created on that layer.

01:12

Also note that on the status bar, the object snap tool is currently toggled off

01:20

on the annotate ribbon in the dimensions panel, click the dimension tool.

01:25

The program prompts you to select objects

01:27

or specify the first extension line origin.

01:30

And there are a number of options

01:33

to dimension the length of a single object

01:36

such as the length of the notch in the upper right corner of the object

01:40

hover the cursor over that object,

01:43

you immediately see a preview of the dimension.

01:47

When that preview displays the desired dimension,

01:50

click to select the object.

01:53

The program then prompts you to specify the dimension line

01:56

location or a second line to create an angular dimension

02:02

to create a linear dimension,

02:04

move the cursor up until the dimension is positioned where you want it.

02:08

And then click to place the dimension.
