B.T.L. Construction Mitigates Risks and Improves Project Outcomes with Accurate Estimates

B.T.L. Construction Mitigates Risks and Improves Project Outcomes with Accurate Estimates

Customer challenge

For over two decades, B.T.L. Construction has been contributing to the success of small, medium, and large-scale industrial, commercial, and institutional building projects in Quebec and Ontario. Their projects have been varied: pharmaceutical, biotechnology, cosmetics, high technology, aerospace, mines & metallurgy, chemical & petrochemical, energy, transportation, commercial real estate, hotel, education, and health. Focused on designing, building, and managing safely and responsibly, B.T.L. carries out each mandate in a manner that best meets the client’s needs. Valuing customer relationships and the well-being of their own staff at work, they pride themselves on staying on budget as close as humanly possible. In a context where the COVID-19 world pandemic dramatically affected costs of materials in the construction industry, the old way of doing things wasn’t cutting it anymore. B.T.L. needed ideas on how they could mitigate financial risks on new and ongoing projects.

Project goals

For that, they turned to Autodesk Solution Provider Graitec whom they had first met in 2019 for a BIM 101 introductory training on Building Projects for General Contractors. When the two companies sat down together for discovery, the meeting quickly started with questions about one specific Autodesk product. This opened a good and productive conversation leading to not only what B.T.L. was looking to accomplish in terms of estimations accuracy, but also other aspects of communication and project management from office to field, to help decrease risks of costly mistakes and general inefficiencies work processes.

Solution

After the initial discovery meeting, Graitec proposed that one of their BIMup Construction Specialists demo the power and possibilities of the Autodesk Construction Cloud platform (with a focus on Build and Takeoff), then follow-up with a proposal for a small business assessment and tailored implementation plan.

Business outcome

As a result, B.T.L. chose to go ahead with an Autodesk Build training for select Field and Administrative personnel, so all could gain a comprehensive understanding of how the product works and how it can be customized. In addition to being able to start using the solution in fast-track mode, this new understanding of the product would help them contribute more easily to a future business assessment and better prepare the company for further digital transformation. With the help of Graitec’s technical support, B.T.L. was able to pilot Autodesk Takeoff. By learning how to reuse data from BIM models, they can now generate more accurate estimations, which led to better budget and cost control.

Conclusion

About this project, Nathalie Fortin, Administration & Finance Director at B.T.L. Construction says: “We are really grateful for Graitec’s dedication and support before and after the training. We know we have only touched the surface of this total solution and we look forward to pursuing implementation, exploring additional features, and standardizing across all projects to connect field and office."
