JCB Construction Leverages the Cloud in Design-Build Projects

JCB Construction Leverages the Cloud in Design-Build Projects

Customer challenge

Founded in 1985, JCB Construction Canada has known incredible growth. From humble beginnings managing and executing private construction, renovation, and interior fit-up projects, they have carved themselves a very enviable place among the country’s best general contractors by staying focussed on customer satisfaction and striving to continuously improve their practices and work methods. Today, with the combined expertise of 115+ employees, JCB now manages and builds medium- to large-scale projects from coast to coast, which include commercial and industrial development, institutional and multi-residential buildings. From their offices located on the South Shore of Montreal (Québec), in Toronto (Ontario) and St. John's (Newfoundland), JCB carries out hundreds of projects annually, for clients across the nation. Challenge: Optimizing communication between headquarters, local offices, construction sites and project stakeholders in Design-Build projects to stay on time and on budget.

Project goals

Hitting it off with members of the Graitec BIMup team at a Construction industry event in 2018, JCB associates readily shared their vision of technology, how it contributed to their growth, but also how disruptive it could be. Through subsequent conversations, Graitec’s construction industry specialists learned more about JCB’s current workflows and top to bottom business issues. JCB absolutely knew that BIM was the future. They knew that, as a Design-Build company, they could benefit from a BIM workflow, but they needed help planning for their digital transformation and getting started the right way.

Solution

In this situation, Graitec proposed the full consulting and services package to proceed with: 1. Audit, needs assessment, and recommendations 2. Implementation plan for Autodesk Revit 3. Help with standards and families creation 4. Training for all types of users 5. Technical support for users and BIM managers 6. Assistance with Autodesk Construction Cloud solutions such as Build, BIM Collaborate, Docs

Business outcome

For JCB, the favorable outcomes of such a large-scale digital transformation are countless. From preventing costly mistakes in the field, to leveraging data in the model to create better estimates, to centralized files, more streamlined workflows and more efficient project and field management, “the best outcome of all is winning bids on those game-changer projects like Collège Sainte-Anne High School” confirms Alexandre-Stéphane Boucher, Vice-President of Construction at JCB Construction Canada. “We are really excited about this Zero Carbon project, carried out in collaboration with professionals using a BIM approach. It simply would not have been in the cards for us had we not made that very strategic decision to change the way we do things.”

Conclusion

He continues: “Choosing Graitec as a business partner was a great decision. The team members assigned to us were knowledgeable, structured and really wanted to see us succeed. Their goal clearly was to get us setup and become totally autonomous with our new tools and processes. Although we are fully setup and productive, we know that we can count on them for training new team members, technical support, and a heads-up on what’s coming.”
