Structural engineers and steel detailers can use a bidirectional link between Revit and Autodesk Advance Steel
00:10
to collaborate on the same 3D model.
00:12
This cross-product functionality can save you and your team a great deal of time,
00:18
while minimizing errors.
00:20
When exporting a Revit model to Advance Steel,
00:23
you can set up your preferred import and export options,
00:26
or synchronize model changes between the two products.
00:30
The Advance Steel Extension for Revit lets you import both the structural members and steel connections into Advance Steel.
00:38
The Revit model can also be a great asset to help you detail your projects more accurately in Advance Steel.
00:45
For this example, the first step is to install the Advance Steel Extension for Revit on your computer.
00:52
To do this, log into your Autodesk account.
00:56
From your profile, under Account, click All Products and Services.
01:01
The All Products and Services page opens.
01:04
On this page, you can search for any product or service you want.
01:09
For this example, in the Search Field, type “revit”.
01:12
In the search results that display, click the Revit software tile.
01:17
Now, on the Revit page, with 2024 selected, under Available downloads, click Extensions.
01:24
Select Advance Steel for Revit 2024 as the extension, and then click Download.
01:30
After you are done with the download, open the file from the installation list in your browser, and then install the extension.
01:37
When the installation is finished, you must restart Revit for the extension to be used.
01:42
After you restart Revit, in the Add-Ins ribbon, expand the Advance Steel Extension drop-down.
01:49
Here, you see options including Import, Export, Synchronization, and Settings.
01:55
Click Settings.
01:58
In the Settings dialog, you can set up your preferred import and export options.
02:04
For this example, click OK.
02:07
You can easily export your project as a .smlx—or steel markup language file—to include the structural steel connections and members.
02:16
First, you must select the parts of the model that you want to export.
02:21
Window select the entire model.
02:23
Then, on the Modify | Multi-Select contextual tab, in the Selection panel, click Filter.
02:30
In the Filter dialog, click the check boxes to toggle on or off the elements you wish to export from the model.
02:37
Once you are finished, click OK.
02:41
Now, expand the Advance Steel Extension drop-down and click Export.
02:45
In the Export utilities dialog, choose Advance export to export the model in SMLX format for import into Advance Steel.
02:54
Click OK.
02:55
In the Save As dialog, in the Save as type drop-down, ensure that Steel markup language (*.smlx) is selected.
03:04
Navigate to the desired location, name the file, and click Save.
03:08
Now, you can import the file into Advance Steel.
03:12
In Advance Steel, from the Export & Import ribbon, in the Revit panel, click Import.
03:20
From the Open menu, select the .smlx file you want to import, and then click Open.
03:27
The elements you selected for export from Revit are now successfully imported.
03:33
The first time you open the imported file, if a section created in Revit has no corresponding section in Advance Steel,
03:40
you are prompted to select a corresponding section from the drop-down.
03:44
Map the correct substitute for the Revit elements.
03:49
Next, right-click any of the joint box or connection elements in the model.
03:53
From the shortcut menu, select Advance Joint Properties.
03:58
This opens a dialog where you can view all the properties of the joint.
04:03
Note that all connections retain their parametric behavior.
